TRA Tyre Codes Explained

The TRA system, developed by the Tire and Rim Association (TRA), classifies off-the-road tyres based on application and tread depth.

How TRA Codes Work

Each code consists of a letter (application) and a number (tread depth/ severity).

TRA Codes Table

TRA Code Description
RM Radial Mining / Earthmover Tyre
TL Tubeless Tyre
TT Tube Type Tyre
B Bias / Cross Ply Tyre
E Earthmover / Off-The-Road Tyre
G Grader Tyre
L Loader Tyre
R Radial Tyre
S Skid Steer / Small Industrial Tyre
VLTS Very Large Tyre Size / Earthmover
E4 Pattern designation for OTR/ Earthmover
2HL Load & Ply Rating (example: 2 High Load)

Tread Depth Meaning

Depth Code Meaning
2 Traction – Soft ground
3 Standard – General use
4 Deep – Longer wear
5 Extra deep – Severe conditions

Key Trade-Off

Deeper tread provides longer life but generates more heat. Selection depends on haul distance, load and terrain.
